Consociate receives 2009 Paul and Sheila Wellstone Social Justice Award
Mary Ann Brenden, who made her consociate commitment in May, 2009, was honored in June with the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Minnesota Chapter's "2009 Paul and Sheila Wellstone Social Justice Award." The award was given for her leadership, service and contributions to furthering social justice. Mary Ann has been a member of the St. Catherine University faculty since 1980 and is an associate professor in the joint St. Catherine University-University of St. Thomas School of Social Work.
For the past 7 years, Mary Ann has led the "Social Work for Social Justice: Strengthening Social Work Practice through the Integration of Catholic Social Teaching”. The project’s curriculum resource guide developed by Brenden in collaboration with the social work faculty, demonstrates the convergence of Catholic Social Teaching and social justice principles with social work practice and the social work code of ethics. It has been provided to 71 social work programs in Catholic colleges and universities across the country to strengthen the teaching of social justice and to develop a cadre of “justice seekers.”
Mary Ann is also the recipient of St. Catherine University’s 2007 Bonnie Jean Kelly and Joan Kelly Faculty Excellence Award and the Alumnae Association's 2007 Myser Award for Teaching Excellence. She serves on the board of the Washington, D.C.-based NETWORK: A National Catholic Social Justice Lobby that works to close the gap between rich and poor and dismantle policies rooted in racism, greed and violence. Currently, she is organizing a national daylong institute on justice integration for the National Association of Christians in Social Work scheduled this fall.
