Sisters of St. Joseph Consensus Statement
Carondelet Village Welcomes New Residents | December 2011

ST. PAUL, MN —Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet residing in Bethany Convent in the Highland Park area of St. Paul moved to their new residences in Carondelet Village, a senior living community, on Tuesday, December 6, following a private Mass at 9:30 a.m. Archbishop Harry Flynn presided at the last liturgy in Bethany Convent, a daily tradition since the convent opened in 1954. After Mass the Sisters participated in a “sending forth” ceremony after which the Sisters, accompanied by other members of the CSJ community and Carondelet Village staff ceremoniously crossed the ramp that currently connects their old to their new home. On Wednesday, December 7, Reverend John Forliti blessed the new Carondelet Village Chapel space at a 9:30 a.m. liturgy.

“These celebrations mark the opening of the Sisters’ newest ministry—Carondelet Village,” explained Sister Margaret Belanger, CSJ, who is the Sisters’ project manager. “This new ministry comes at the close of a year that marked the Sisters’ 175 anniversary in the United States and 160th year of service in Minnesota. The Sisters will be joined by residents from the general public later in December.”

This first phase of Carondelet Village includes four levels of care: 82 senior apartments; 46 assisted living apartments; 19 memory care apartments; and 45 care center (private skilled nursing suites). Construction of Phase 2 will begin after Bethany Convent is demolished in January 2012 and will add an additional 67 additional senior apartments to the complex.

Carondelet Village (www.carondeletvillage.org), is a joint project of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, St. Paul Province, and Presbyterian Homes & Services (PHS) offering a full continuum of care including services and programs for residents and the greater community. One of its unique features is Carondelet Circle, a wellness and life enrichment center that includes a library, bistro, conservatory, market and gift shop, arts and crafts studios, and intimate gathering spaces that will be opening to residents and the general community over the next several months. Carondelet Circle will also host an array of holistic wellness and enrichment programs for residents as well as the larger community. PHS is managing Carondelet Village.

Although Phase 1 is fully reserved, persons interested in being added to the wait list may contact Karen Vento, Housing Advisor, at 651-695-5005 or kvento@preshomes.org for more information.
